Why do boats float?
23rd Feb 2026
P4 had a brilliant time investigating floating and sinking. The children made predictions, tested lots of different objects and chatted about what they noticed.
To finish, they explored a STEM mystery:
🛥Why does a boat float? 🛥
Using two oranges, one with its peel and one without, the children discovered that the peel acts a bit like a boat’s hull. The orange with its peel stayed afloat because the peel is full of tiny air pockets, helping it stay buoyant. Once the peel was removed, the orange sank. Suddenly boats made a whole lot more sense.
Listen to Will and Arthur explain what they learnt!
